The FINNCAP project is a national initiative in Finland with cross-industrial co-operation and a wide range of participants. Fortum is the largest energy company in Finland and majority owned by the Finnish State. Teollisuuden Voima is owned by industrial energy consumers and municipal energy companies.
FINNCAP fulfills the EU demonstration requirements especially well, key features:
FINNCAP project is currently the only large scale demonstration project in Europe that is planning ship transportation of CO2. According to current analysis, ship transportation is feasible already for distances exceeding 300 km. Ship transportation does not require special permitting or long lead times and allows for flexibility to alter storage sites and utilizing the CO2 for example in enhanced oil recovery (EOR).
Finland does not have suitable geological formations for CO2 storage. It is essential to test CCS also in areas and countries that do not have storage capacity nearby but are willing to make emission cuts with CCS technology. In addition, the Meri-Pori power plant is located more than 1,000 km away from the closest demo projects and offers truly unique geographical coverage for the demonstration programme.
Meri-Pori power plant is similar to the coal-fired power plants that are currently built in emerging economies. Retro-fit of advanced post-combustion technology in Meri-Pori could offer invaluable experience for installing CCS to existing power plants across the world. Fortum has also the desire to transfer CCS technology to its power plants outside the EU.
All companies in the project consortium have willingness and know-how to develop state of the art solutions for CCS implementation. The project has advanced according to plans and has the capability to become part of the first wave of CCS demonstration projects operational already in 2015.
