Why CCS?

Why CCS?

The increasing use of coal as a fuel especially in emerging economies makes CCS an especially important tool in climate change mitigation during the coming decades.

Despite the efforts in energy saving and efficiency, global need for energy is growing and coal and other fossil fuels will play a major role in the energy supply for decades to come.

According to International Energy Agency (IEA) and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) CCS will be one of the most important technology solutions in climate change mitigation during coming decades. CCS could provide up to 20% of the global emission reductions that are needed by 2050. Also the Finnish Research Center VTT has assessed that CCS could contribute by some 20-30 % to global emission reductions.

However, CCS should be considered as only one important tool in  the toolbox for climate change mitigation. Especially energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and nuclear power will also have to play an important role in achieving the needed emission reductions and de-carbonizing the energy supply.
